Personally, my highest priority on special event nights is to ride the most popular attractions with significantly shorter lines. Last year, we were able to repeatedly hop on Space Mountain with minimal to no wait. We walked right onto the Jungle Cruise. Walked on! In case you aren’t familiar with typical Magic Kingdom crowds, that is practically a miracle.

We also only waited about 20 minutes for TRON Lightcycle / Run. On any given day, TRON can easily command a 60 to 80-minute wait, so a 20-minute queue feels like an absolute gift!

Secret #2: The Late Parade Performance Is a Total Crowd Mirage

If parades and fireworks are more your style, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party has so much to offer. The famous Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade runs twice during the event. The first parade steps off at 8:15 PM, and the second performance is at 11:15 PM.

Timing Your Spot for the Headless Horseman

You absolutely won’t want to miss the Headless Horseman as he rides along the parade route about 10 to 15 minutes before the initial floats arrive. Make sure you claim your viewing spot early to catch his iconic ride!

The second parade at 11:15 PM is significantly less crowded than the first. Stay up just a little later for a maximized experience.

Secret #3: Your Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Ticket Grants a Hidden 3-Hour Head Start

While the event officially starts at 7:00 PM, I am going to let you in on a little secret: your event ticket actually gains you admission to the Magic Kingdom as early as 4:00 PM! This gives you three bonus hours in the park before the spooky festivities even begin.

Secret #4: Walking Up at 4:15 PM Completely Avoids the Gate Bottleneck entering Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

There is always a large crowd that waits in line to enter right at 4:00 PM. That is totally fine if that is your preference, but I personally prefer a smoother entrance. I like to show up to the security checkpoints around 4:15 PM. By waiting just a few extra minutes, the initial rush clears out, and I don’t have to wait long at all to process my ticket and get the festive fun started.

Staying Until Midnight Closing to Maximize Value

Because the event runs until midnight, feel free to maximize your dollar and stay until the very last minute. Remember, you can still get into an attraction line up until 11:59 PM! After that, maximize your experience by strolling through the shops on Main Street, U.S.A. to pick up your final souvenirs for the evening as the crowds disperse.

When it comes to viewing the parade and the fireworks with a bit of breathing room, strategy is everything. I love to watch the parade from Frontierland. It naturally draws fewer spectators, meaning there is a little more wiggle room for viewing versus the dense crowds packed along Main Street, U.S.A.

The bonus feature? You can watch the parade pass by and immediately jump onto your next ride before the crowds on Main Street have even started singing “Boo-to-You!”

Secret #6: The Perfect Fireworks View Is Positioned Right on Main Street

The special nighttime spectacular, Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular, only happens once per night at 10:00 PM during each Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Jack Skellington himself takes the Cinderella Castle stage for this fan-favorite show.

To catch both the castle projections and the fireworks, I recommend positioning yourself right between the Emporium and Casey’s Corner. You will get a fantastic, unobstructed view of both the castle face and the high-level fireworks.

Strategic Arrival Times for the Nighttime Spectacular

If you are okay missing Jack Skellington up close, your best bet is to arrive and claim a spot at least 20 minutes before the fireworks start. However, if Jack is a high priority, you will need to be in place at least one hour before the show—and closer to two hours prior for the absolute best front-row viewing.

The Stress-Free VIP Dessert Party Option

Want a completely stress-free option? You can book the Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular Dessert Party. This add-on lets you enjoy Halloween-themed treats, sweets, and drinks at the Tomorrowland Terrace, followed by exclusive access to a private, reserved viewing area for the fireworks.

Secret #7: The Midnight Hocus Pocus Showing Gives You Bonus Park Time

If you want to really round out your Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party experience, you need to allot time for the Hocus Pocus show. This is a wicked stage show hosted by the Sanderson Sisters, who team up with your favorite Disney Villains to create a sinister party potion. The production features fantastic stage projections, incredibly talented dancers, and amazing special effects!

Why the Midnight Showing Strategy Works Best

No need to fret about missing rides or the parade just to catch this show—I have an insider tip for you. The midnight showing is absolutely perfect! Most of the crowds leave right after the fireworks, meaning the battle for a great view of the Sanderson Sisters is much less dramatic.

By catching the midnight performance, you maximize your park day even further and get 20 to 25 minutes of bonus time in the park after hours. I love it when you can experience world-class entertainment and rides all with one ticket!

Checking Showtimes and Managing Heavy Crowds

Typical Showtimes:

• August & September: 9:05 PM, 10:35 PM, and 12:00 AM.
• October: An extra early-evening performance is usually added, running at approximately 7:35 PM, 9:05 PM, 10:35 PM, and 12:00 AM.

One Word of Warning: The very first show of each night is incredibly crowded and chaotic. Parents with small children naturally rush to watch this one before bedtime, so it is always the most packed. Avoid this one if you dislike heavy crowds!

Secret #8: Adults Can Wear Costumes at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party—With a Catch

Want to wear a costume to Disney? This event is your perfect solution, since adult costumes are usually strictly prohibited in Disney parks during regular hours. However, you do need to make sure you adhere to their official safety policies, which vary by age group.

Costume Rules for Guests Aged 14 and Older

Anyone over the age of 14 has to comply with the tightest rules and regulations:

• No masks of any kind are allowed.
• No full-length costumes that drag or trail on the ground.
• Capes are okay, provided they do not go below your waist.
• Wings or feathers must stay within a reasonable width so they do not hit or obstruct other guests.
• Props and toys cannot look like real weapons. You can carry a plastic magic wand or a toy pirate sword as long as it is soft, flexible, and completely harmless.

Lenient Costume Rules for Kids Under 13

Children have much easier costume rules to follow:

• Masks may be worn, but they cannot cover the entire face. The eyes must be completely visible so that Cast Members can ensure the child has proper peripheral vision.
• Full-length costumes and store-bought outfits are perfectly fine, provided they aren’t a tripping hazard.

A small tip from a pro: It’s Florida, people! Even though these events run into October, the evenings can still be incredibly hot and humid. It can also be very rainy! Please plan your costumes appropriately for the weather. And don’t forget your poor feet—you are still going to walk miles and miles, so pair your costume with comfortable, supportive shoes. Secret #9: Late-Night Trick-or-Treating Yields Twice the Candy with Zero Lines

One of the most popular features of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is the trick-or-treating! There are several designated spots throughout the Magic Kingdom to collect treats. When you enter the event, you will be handed an official map, a starter treat bag, and your event wristband. They will even start you off with a special treat right at the entrance!

To find the candy trails, simply follow the giant, glowing inflatable pillars scattered throughout the park. Walk right on through the designated queues to find the treat stations, which are loaded with brand-name candy bars, M&Ms, Skittles, and more. It’s one of the best parts of the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Why You Should Skip the Candy Trails Early in the Night

These candy stops are very popular early in the event, and the lines can look intimidatingly long right when the party begins. Do not waste your precious party time waiting in these lines early in the evening! The treats will still be there later—I promise.

I like to go trick-or-treating around 9:30 PM or 10:00 PM. The treat barrels are still completely full, the lines are almost non-existent, and the Cast Members are usually ready to clear out inventory, meaning they will happily scoop extra handfuls into your bag! If you are a serious candy lover, you will definitely want to bring a larger, sturdy tote bag from home to store your loot as you go.

Premium Trick-or-Treat Options for Food Allergies

Disney knows how to take care of their guests with food allergies. For my gluten-free or allergy-aware friends, you are absolutely not left out in the cold! When you arrive at the party, simply ask a Cast Member for a teal allergy bag.

When you go through the standard candy stops, instead of candy, you will be given special colored tokens. You can then take these tokens to the designated Allergy Centers (usually located near Town Square Theater and Heritage House in Liberty Square) to trade them for a wide variety of premium, allergy-safe treats!

1. Whale Watching

This one honestly depends on the time of year, but it will always be one of my top 5 things to do in Maui. The whales arrive in late November—that’s when you’ll usually see the first ones—and then they stay through April. You might catch a few at the tail end in May, but it’s not going to be very many. So, if whale watching is your number one goal, you really want to target the months of January, February, and March. That’s when you’re going to see so many whales you won’t believe your eyes.

If you can get a hotel on Kaʻanapali Beach, that’s where you’re going to feel like the whales come right up to say hello. And a balcony room is even better! At night, you can actually hear them breathing as they go by. It is one of my very favorite sounds in nature.

My personal favorite whale watching company is the Pacific Whale Foundation. Not only do they host great whale watching trips, but their scientists are also working to preserve the whales’ habitat and learn things about them. You’re contributing to both science and your own adventure at the same time with every dollar that you spend!

2. Slaughterhouse Beach

The beach has several names, officially Mokulēʻia Bay, but Slaughterhouse Beach is what I’ve been calling it since I was a little kid. I have been visiting here since the 1980’s, so it is clearly one of my top 5 things to do on Maui.

Apparently It gets its spooky name from an old Honu’ula Ranch slaughterhouse that stood on the cliffs in the 1960s.

You must be able to hike down some significantly steep stairs, but once you get down the stairs, it opens into a beautiful cove. This is the best beach for boogie boarding and just actually standing out in the waves.

When the tide is lower, you can walk out about 100 yards, and it’s still only chest-deep for an adult. Many people love to just relax in the cool water and enjoy the marvelous views. If it’s the right time of year, you can see whales breaching right from the cove. We saw several at Thanksgiving time, if you can believe it!

It is so fun to watch all the boogie boarders, from the littlest children all the way up to those who look like they are professionals. I’ve seen 360s and all kinds of other tricks on the boogie boards there at Slaughterhouse.

If you are a beach sitter instead of a boogie boarder, it’s also a perfect place. You have a great view of Molokaʻi, I think, and you can just sit and watch the waves and enjoy the sunshine—along with the entertainment of the boogie boarders, of course.

3. Haleakalā Crater

The drive to Haleakalā is absolutely one of my top 5 things to do on Maui. You go from the beach level all the way up to the top of the mountain in just the space of about an hour. The drive is fun and beautiful; you go from being in the sunshine, and often you drive right through the clouds and up to the crater. You can go on hikes, you can see the observatory, and you can do all kinds of things while you’re up there. But don’t miss the opportunity to see the rare silversword, a volcanic plant that is so different than the rest of the island!

Getting to Haleakalā requires a little bit of effort on your part before your visit, depending on your preferences.

How to visit Haleakalā

First, if you want to go for sunrise, there are tickets you need to get in advance on Recreation.gov. Some people love to go for sunrise. I am not an early bird, so there is no way I’m going up Haleakalā at 3 AM to watch the sunrise! If you are, phenomenal—if that’s your thing, you need to plan and book your tickets on the first day they become available – roughly 60 days in advance. Those sunrise tickets go fast!

For the rest of us who are late risers, it’s even easier—you don’t even need a sunrise reservation if you visit during the day! You will need a national park entrance pass per car.

4. Turtle Beach (Hoʻokipa Beach Park)

This beach is close to the airport. If you are doing an airport run to pick up family, stop at Turtle Beach. It makes it very easy to sneak in one of my top 5 things to do on Maui.

There are strict rules in Hawaii about approaching the turtles, so stay back, please—don’t be one of those people! View them from a safe distance.

On the day we were there last, a few months ago, we could see probably 50 turtles or more. Amazing!

There are two viewing options — you can see them from the beach level, and you can see them from up above on the rocks near the parking lot.

The beach is always stunning with all the lava rock in contrast with the blue water and the sand of the beach. Don’t miss the sunset here!

5. Hāna Highway

You do not want to take this one if you have any form of motion sickness!

This is a windy, windy road. It is also the only way to get to Maui‘s famous black sand beach. If you want to go to the Black Sand Beach at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, you need to plan and get reservations on the official Hawaii State Parks reservation site. I recommend you purchase your parking and entry pass when they become available, 30 days before your visit. One pass is required per vehicle.

You cannot go that day and get in. You need to buy advanced tickets! I cannot stress this enough.

The tickets have a timed entry, so prepare wisely to enter within the first 30 minutes of your ticket window. If you are late, you may not be allowed into the parking lot.

The Black Sand Beach is a two-hour drive from Paia, so plan accordingly.

For those of you who have hearty stomachs and want to take on the Hana Highway. It is amazing, it’s beautiful, and it’s narrow, and you get to see some of the best views you will ever enjoy in your lifetime. I love the drive, and I don’t get sick personally, so I would do it again and again.

Rope Drop

This is the secret weapon for your Disney day. Why? Well, while everyone else is sleeping, you can get a jump on the rides that you care most about. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean only heading to the mountains like Space Mountain or Expedition Everest. It can mean tackling the ones that your four-year-old considers the most dear: Dumbo, Aladdin’s Magic Carpets, or even Peter Pan. Cause heaven knows that is gonna be somewhere between a 40- to 75-minute wait the rest of the day—curse you, Peter Pan standby line!

But what it means to go to rope drop is you have to get up early. Now, for some people, that’s very, very easy. For others, like me, getting up early is tough. The only motivation I ever have is Disney—I can get behind this! I’m usually a person who likes to sleep in, but when it comes to getting into shorter lines for Disney, I will do a rope drop.

When to Arrive

Now, here’s a trick: you need to be at the park at least 30 minutes prior to the opening time. If you’re staying on property, you actually get an advantage here and have 30 minutes extra before everyone else gets the opportunity to go through the front doors. So be sure to get there at least 30 minutes before you personally are allowed through the gate. The reason why you need to be there 30 minutes before your opening time is because you have to go through security, and there’s a huge line for security. You know we want to be towards the beginning of that line!

If you do this, you can get a jump to get on the rides that are most important to you. Now, the trick is maximizing that first hour. You will be able to get on each ride with maybe a 10-minute, maximum 20-minute wait to get on the ride—except for the big mountains. Those are gonna grow quickly! So if you have Lightning Lane passes for later in the day for the mountains—we’re gonna talk about that in a second—you can target all of the other rides during the rope drop golden hour and make sure that you are making the most out of that magical morning that you worked so hard to achieve.

Lightning Lanes

Lightning Lanes are worth the money. Especially if you have someone in your group who cannot stand for long periods of time—maybe a grandparent, toddlers, or someone who is autistic or has ADHD. Every family has someone who often has challenges. Using these options ensures that everyone gets to experience the magic together without the physical or mental toll of a massive line, keeping the focus entirely on fun instead of exhaustion. Lightening Lanes are not cheap, but they are magical. Be sure to take advantage of them all day with long.

Special Events

By buying special event tickets, you actually reduce the entire population of a park. Now, each park does not necessarily have special event tickets during your visit—you have to plan around them. So things like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party or Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party are perfect opportunities for you to maximize your ride-loving heart and get on those rides with much reduced wait times.

If you are a person who can skip the fireworks and the parade, your ride wait times will reduce even further during these special events. I’ve had moments where we walked right onto Space Mountain and only waited 20 minutes for TRON Lightcycle / Run! So you want to be able to use these party events to go and maximize your ride opportunities.

If you do love the parades and fireworks, that’s cool—you do you. But you will still get reduced wait times. For example, during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, we were able to walk right onto the Jungle Cruise ride at Magic Kingdom. For those of you that are in the know, that’s almost a miracle!

Night Owls

For those of you that are night owls, you too have an opportunity to maximize your ride time. Now, the mountain rides or the more popular rides are still going to have longer lines when it gets closer to the closing of a park. It’s true, there’s just some holdover from the rest of the day. But it’s those peripheral rides—the ones you might’ve missed or the ones you wanna go back and visit again just because you love them so much—these are the ones to tackle at the end of the day.

Take Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway—hands-down, you can ride it over and over and over again at the end of the day. Or if you want to go and ride Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, that’s another great one that you’ll be able to do at the end of the day with very minimal lines.

Use Your My Disney Experience App

This tool is everyone’s best friend. By watching the ride times in the official My Disney Experience app, you can actually get a feel for what the wait times typically look like.

I like to put one person in charge in our family to watch the ride times and keep an eye on them. That way, when we’re starting to target a particular area of the park, we know what to expect and we can plan for how long we’re going to be in line. By watching your wait times inside the My Disney Experience app, you can start to see where crowd flow is going, and then you can target those places that have lower ride times.

If you see a line is a little longer, I have a coping strategy for you. Grab the snack and then get in line, especially if the queue is outside. You’ll have time to eat the snack before you actually have to throw it away! If it’s an indoor line, don’t do that, cause sometimes you have Cast Members that are more particular than others and won’t let you eat inside. You have to judge accordingly.

They know your preferences, your drink order, and how many desserts you like to have each night. But most importantly for me, they know my food allergy needs. They took care of everything and made sure it was completely gluten-free and safe for me to eat. The Disney cruise service is impeccable and personalized every single night. They will even cut up your steak if you ask nicely.

Disney Cruise Line Unbeatable Ports: Castaway Cay & Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

These island paradise beaches are the gems of the Bahamas. Each has the magic of Disney with character meet-and-greets with the feel of a Disney Park. There are places and spaces for everyone. Beach wheelchairs and access for those who need it. Shade for those who need to be out of the sun. Family beaches. Adult beaches. You name it, and Disney has thought of it and made it magical for you all with a Caribbean flair.

Disney Cruise Line has a lengthy list of excursions, too, but personally, I haven’t even needed an excursion because the beach and facilities are more than enough entertainment for me.

These kits have been incredibly popular. Each kit works like a cake mix — you add ingredients like water, oil, eggs, vanilla, or butter to complete the recipe for fresh food at home.

Kit Description and Details

Limited time sale for holiday baking gluten-free kits includes 16 different kits. Each one is gluten-free and dairy-free. To make the kits at home, you will add a few ingredients and bake the items.

For the dairy-free individuals, I have used these kits with Oat Milk for the most part. I have not tested them with butter substitutes, but I would love to hear feedback if you do. Chocolate chips are not included so individuals with a dairy intolerance can choose the appropriate chocolate chip for their needs.

Focaccia Bread

This is hands-down everyone’s favorite bread. It’s easy to make and tastes amazing! The spice kit is included in a separate bag so you can decide whether or not to include it. Makes one 8×8 loaf.

• You will need: Water, yeast, olive oil
• Tools used at my house: Dough Hook, bowl, 8×8 pan, parchment, measuring cups & spoons, shower caps
• Ingredients: White rice flour, brown rice flour, sorghum flour, potato starch, tapioca starch, psyllium husk, salt, sugar, spices

French Bread

This is easily my family’s favorite bread. We make it once a week or more. We use it for soups, dipping, after-school snacks, or to round out a meal. The packet contains enough to make one large French bread loaf or two smaller ones.

• You will need: Water and yeast

Cinnamon Rolls

These are honestly the best cinnamon rolls I’ve ever made. They are tender and soft. They are a decadent breakfast or dessert. The packet comes with powdered sugar to help you make the frosting too. Makes 9 cinnamon rolls to fill an 8×8 baking dish.

• You will need: Water, milk (any kind), egg, oil or butter, yeast, additional butter for filling and frosting

• Ingredients: Tapioca Starch, white rice flour, sorghum, sugar, salt, baking powder, xanthan gum, psyllium husk, brown sugar, cinnamon

Dinner Rolls

These are the perfect edition to your holiday dinner. These dinner rolls are soft and puffy. Perfect with a little butter or dipped in gravy. The fan favorite for any meal.

• Ingredients: White rice flour, sorghum flour, potato starch, tapioca starch, psyllium husk, salt, sugar

Pie Crust

This crust makes an excellent, flaky pie. I’ve used it for quiche, one-crust and double-crust pies. The kit is enough to make two 9-inch crusts. The filling is all up to you!

• You will need: Water, butter or crisco, egg(for the wash)

Biscuits

These biscuits are simply decadent. They are buttery soft on the inside and have a crisp edge too. Perfect for breakfast sandwiches or served with butter and jam they are a perfect addition to any meal. For dairy-free, use crisco butter-flavored and any substitute milk you prefer.

Sandwich Bread

This loaf is standard-sized, slightly larger than a Pepperidge Farm loaf of bread. It is perfect for sandwiches, grilled cheese, French toast, or butter and jam.

Tortillas

These tortillas are every bit as good as a regular flour tortilla. My family eats them so fast off the griddle, that they are usually half-gone before we eat dinner. The tortillas are great as tacos, burritos, or with butter for a quick snack.

Pizza Crusts

My son loves pizza. We always keep these crusts on hand for when there is a pizza emergency — with teenagers, that is a real thing. This kit makes two 12-inch crusts. You bake them for five minutes and then can either top them and bake, or freeze them for future use.

These are perfect for an everyday breakfast or an easy weekend morning too. The package makes 18 medium pancakes or 24 smaller ones.

Brownies

No one will ever know these are gluten-free and dairy-free. They are a pan full of happiness made out of ooey-gooey chocolate. I prefer light olive oil in this recipe because it stops them from drying out. Makes an 8×8 pan of brownies.

Any Mix-in Cookie

This cookie mix is ready for you to add anything you like. We love cranberries and white chocolate chips, but you can use mini M&M’s with mini chips, Heath bits, caramel bits, macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips, or anything else you wish. Makes 18 large cookies or 24 small.

Snickerdoodles

If I were to choose a favorite cookie to take to events, these snickerdoodles would be my top choice every time. They fly off the plate. They are kid and adult-approved. No one can tell they are gluten-free. They taste like a little bundle of cinnamon and sugar happiness. Kit makes 18 large or 24 small cookies.

Every Valentine’s Day growing up we would deliver these cookies covered in pink frosting to all our neighbors. I’ve adapted the recipe to be gluten-free, but they still taste like my childhood. They are pillows of sugary goodness. The kit makes 18 large or 24 small cookies. The frosting ingredients are included in the kit.
